Sleepy Eye Slips By Springfield

8/6/13

The Tigers played host to Sleepy Eye on Tuesday night. It was the third game of the tournament for both teams. Sleepy Eye entered the game at 1-1 and the Tigers were 2-0. Offense was the story of the night with the teams combining for twenty four hits and fifteen runs. Ultimately, four Springfield errors made the difference as the Tigers fell, 8-7.

Sleepy Eye jumped out in front in the top of the first when they got three hits off Springfield starter Alex Frank to give them a 2-0 lead.

Jacob Menage got the Springfield offense fired up when he beat out an infield hit to lead off the bottom of the first. Alex Fink, Ryan Sturm, and Christian Loomis all ripped hits to plate three runs and put Springfield on top, 3-2.

Menage legged out his second infield hit with two down in the bottom of the second. Brandon Wilhelmi followed by crushing a double to make the score 4-2.

Joey Walter started the third with a base hit. Then the Tiger defense let Frank down, as they would commit three errors to yield a pair of unearned runs, allowing Sleepy Eye to tie the game at four.

The Tigers continued to put up runs off Sleepy Eye starter Sean Mathiowetz in the home half of the third. Sturm started the inning with an infield hit. A pair of ground balls moved him around to third. Cooper Scheffler came through with a single to score Sturm and put Springfield back on top, 5-4.

Frank allowed a single to start the fourth, but then settled in to retire the next ten Sleepy Eye batters. A Walter triple followed by a sacrifice fly plated the tying run for the Indians in the top of the seventh.

Mathiowetz's night came to an end after he allowed a two-bagger to Menage. Sleepy Eye turned to Kyle Pinke, a draftee from St. James, who proceeded to retire side.

Jake Bohnen started the eighth with an infield hit. Alan Woitas reached via error. Kelly Krzmarzick put Sleepy Eye on top with he cracked a two-run double. The Tigers went to the bullpen to bring on Loomis who walked a batter, but escaped from the jam with the score remaining 7-5.

Falling behind got the Springfield offense going again in the bottom of the eighth. Pinke gave up back-to-back hits to Marc Salazar and Loomis and was lifted for Matt Helget. Helget retired the first two batters he faced. Then pinch-hitter Matt Vogel came through with a huge single to tie the game at seven.

Loomis allowed an infield hit in between the first two outs of the ninth before being lifted for Fink. Alan Woitas singled on a 3-1 pitch from Fink to drive in Andrew Woitas and put Sleepy Eye on top.

Helget issued a walk to start the bottom of the ninth, but then retired the next three batters to seal the 8-7 win.

Jacob Menage led the Tigers at the plate with three hits. Ryan Sturm, Christian Loomis, and Cooper Scheffler added two hits each. Brandon Wilhelmi, Alex Fink, Marc Salazar, and Matt Vogel rounded out the offense with one hit apiece. Joey Walter had two hits for Sleepy Eye. The 4, 5, and 6 batters in their order, Jake Bohnen, Andrew Woitas, and Kelly Krzmarzick all had big nights with two hits and two RBIs each. Matt Helget picked up the win on the mound, working two innings, giving up just one hit and one walk. Christian Loomis took the hard luck loss, going one and two-thirds innings, surrendering one run, on one hit, with one strikeout and one walk.

The loss drops Springfield to 2-1 in the Region 2C Tournament and improves Sleepy Eye to 2-1. Both teams will continue tournament play on Friday. Springfield travels to New Ulm and Sleepy Eye heads to Leavenworth with the first pitch scheduled for 8pm in both games. For an exciting Friday night, head to Johnson Park in New Ulm! Go Tigers!

NOTES: Zach Bisel and Brandon Wilhelmi combined for a great foul ball catch in the top of the fourth. They both were after a ball near the third base dugout. The ball bounced off Bisel's glove and Wilhelmi was there to snag it before it hit the ground...All three of Springfield's region games have been one-run ballgames...Opponents have made the Tigers pay for errors this season. Springfield has allowed 151 total runs, 55 of those have been unearned.
