Tigers Soak Redbirds

7/7/13

Springfield was back home on Sunday night after getting a win in St. James earlier in the day. Redwood Falls paid a visit to Riverside Park. As the game began, storms could be heard in the distance. They would produce an hour and a half delay in the ballgame in the top of the third. After a lot of work on the field, play continued, with the Tigers shortening the game to seven innings, via the ten-run rule, in a 12-2 win.

Christian Loomis started on the bump for Springfield. He worked around a pair of hits in the top of the first to keep the game scoreless.

Jordan Mann took the ball for the Redbirds. The Tigers got to him in their first at-bat. Jacob Menage singled, stole second and advanced to third when the throw from the catcher went into centerfield. Alex Fink drew a walk and also stole second. Ryan Sturm opened the scoring when he drove a sac fly to right to drive in Menage.

Matt Vogel started the home half of the second with a double. A wild pitch moved him to third. Then it was sac fly time again. Marc Salazar launched a fly that allowed Vogel to score the Tigers second run of the night. The Redbirds helped the Tigers get their third run with a walk, wild pitch and an error.

Drizzle started in the second and after one pitch in the top of the third the umpires cleared the field as the skies opened. When the rain stopped it was questionable whether or not play would be able to be resumed. Water was sitting in several parts of the infield and the dirt was very smeary in a number of places. Determined to get the game in, the Tigers came together with rakes, shovels, and lots of dry infield dirt to get the field in playable condition.

Exactly one hour and thirty minutes after play was interrupted, play resumed with Loomis heading back to the mound. The delay caused Loomis to lose the sharpness he displayed in the first two innings, but he battled through to work a solid six innings. The Redbirds picked up an unearned run in the fifth with the help of a Tiger error. A leadoff single and a pair of wild pitches allowed Redwood Falls to plate their second run of the night.

Meanwhile, the Redbirds tried to work through the game one pitcher, one inning at a time. Eric Weineke took the bottom of the third and gave up one run while issuing a walk and hitting a batter. Marc Salazar came through with a two-out RBI single to make the score 4-0.

Austin Kretsch went to the hill and battled control, issuing three walks and hitting two, leading to two additional Tiger runs. Kretsch finished on a positive when he returned to the mound in the fifth for his second inning of work and retired the side in order.

With the score 6-2, left-hander Brady Bierl took his turn on the mound for the Redbirds in the bottom of the sixth. Walks were again an issue, with four free passes and two Tiger hits making the score 11-2.

Shawn Anderson took over for Loomis in the top of the seventh and worked around a leadoff single to toss a scoreless inning. John Jenniges took over the mound duties in the bottom of the seventh. Brandon Wilhelmi greeted him with a double. Alex Fink singled to move him to third and Sturm ended the game via the ten-run rule with a sacrifice fly to score Wilhelmi and make the final 12-2.

Jacob Menage led the Tiger bats with two hits. Brandon Wilhelmi, Alex Fink, Christian Loomis, Matt Vogel, and Marc Salazar each stroked one hit in the contest. Austin Kretsch led the Redbirds with two hits. Loomis picked up his third win of the season, working six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits with four strikeouts. Jordan Mann took the loss for Redwood Falls, going two innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with two strikeouts.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 12-5 in the Tomahawk East and 14-8 overall. They'll begin a challenging four game road trip by heading west on Highway 14 to battle Lamberton on Wednesday night at 8pm. Come cheer on this exciting ball club! See you at the yard!

NOTES: It took many hard working folks to get the field in shape after the rain delay. Thanks go out to everyone whose sweat and muscle allowed the game to be played...Springfield has won five of their last six Tomahawk East League games...The Tigers have played three Sunday doubleheaders this season and have posted a 5-1 record in those games.
