Tigers End Tourney With a W

6/2/13

The Tigers had a few more bodies to work with on Sunday morning with the arrival of Brandon Wilhelmi, Jason Nachreiner, and Alex Frank. All would play significant roles in Springfield's solid 5-0 shutout victory over Big Lake in St. Stephen.

Wilhelmi started the game with a base hit. Alex Fink followed with a single and Christian Loomis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Vogel gave the Tigers the lead with a clutch, two-out, two-run double.

Staked to the two run lead, Alex Frank took the bump for his first appearance of the 2013 season. Frank had been out of action due to a hand injury. He appeared no worse for the wear, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the first.

Springfield padded their lead in the second when Mike Salazar drew a one-out walk. Wilhelmi doubled. This time it was Fink's turn to come through with a key hit: a two-out, two-run single right back up the middle, making the score 4-0.

The White Caps' put together their biggest threat in the home half of the second. They got runners at second and third to start the inning on a pair of fly balls that found just the right spots to fall in the outfield. However, a third fly ball would put the brakes on the rally. Mike Salazar made the catch in right and fired it in to cut-off man, Ryan Sturm, who made the relay to catcher, Wilhelmi, for the tag and second out of the inning at the plate as the runner from third attempted to score.

Big Lake starter Beau Hoaby tossed a pair of scoreless innings before being lifted after the fourth inning. Dalton Hesley came on in relief and did not allow a hit before the White Caps went to the bullpen again with two outs in the sixth for Matt Loegering.

Frank issued a lead-off walk in the bottom of the third before retiring ten straight batters. He worked around back-to-back hits in the bottom of the sixth to keep Big Lake off the scoreboard.

Ryan Sturm started the seventh with a double and came around for an insurance run. Nachreiner tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh to wrap up the Springfield victory.

Brandon Wilhelmi and Alex Fink accounted for four of the Tigers' hits, clubbing two each. Ryan Sturm, Christian Loomis, and Matt Vogel added one each to the Springfield attack. No one had more than one hit for Big Lake. Alex Frank earned the win, going six innings, allowing four hits, and notching six strikeouts. Beau Hoaby took the loss for the White Caps, working four innings, giving up four runs on five hits, with five strikeouts.

The victory improves Springfield's overall record to 8-2 on the year. The Tigers return to Tomahawk East League play on Friday night when they travel to Leavenworth to battle the Orioles. Swing over to cheer on this exciting ball club! See you there!

NOTES: Sunday's victory was the first time the Tigers have finished the Omann Insurance Invitational with a win. The 7th place finish was their best finish since they finished second in 2010...This year the Tigers played all three of their tournament games at St. Stephen. Their record in the tournament at the two sites is 4-8 at St. Stephen and 0-6 at Sartell...The shutout was the fourth time this season the Springfield pitching staff has kept the opponent from scoring. That is one more shutout than the Tigers recorded in the last three seasons combined. They had two in 2010, one in 2011, and none in 2012.
