Four Early Runs Too Much for Tigers to Overcome

7/15/12

On Sunday night Springfield traveled to New Ulm to take on the American Division leading Brewers. New Ulm took advantage of Tiger miscues and walks to score four early runs. That would be all they would need as they rolled to a 4-2 win.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the first, but were unable to put anything on the board. In the bottom of the inning, the Brewers took advantage of a Tiger error, along with a base hit from Brady Ranweiler and an RBI single to right from Brock Sieve to score a pair of unearned runs.

Christian Loomis began the second with a solid single. Adam Schmid took his place at first when he reached via a fielder's choice. A ground out moved Schmid to second. Then Zach Bisel drove in Springfield's first run of the night with a single.

In the bottom of the second, New Ulm got the run right back. Taylor Rolloff started with a single. He stole second before Nick Seidl drew a walk. Pitcher Brett Gieseke reached when Rolloff was forced out at third. A passed ball allowed the runners to move up to second and third. Then Aaron Pfaff launched a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Seidl, making the score 3-1.

Gieseke and Springfield hurler Matt Vogel posted zeros in the third. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Vogel issued a another free pass to Seidl. A sac bunt and a base hit from Pfaff moved him around to score New Ulm's fourth run of the contest.

Springfield had four hits in the first two innings, but Brewer hurler Gieseke found his groove and allowed just one hit the rest of the way. That hit came in the sixth when Marc Salazar led off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Jacob Menage moved him into scoring position and Christian Loomis drove in the Tigers' second run of the night.

Vogel dug in after the four early runs from the Brewers and kept them off the board the rest of the way. Both pitchers finished the game strong with Gieseke pitching one, two, three eighth and ninth innings to secure the 4-2 win for the Brewers.

Christian Loomis led the Tigers with two of their five hits. Zach Bisel, Matt Vogel, and Alex Fink rounded out the Springfield offense with one hit each. Aaron Pfaff, Brock Sieve, and Taylor Rolloff led the Brewers with two hits apiece. Pfaff also had two RBIs while Nick Seidl scored two of New Ulm's four runs. Brett Gieseke earned the complete game win. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Vogel went the distance for Springfield, giving up four runs, just one of which was earned, on nine hits, with two strikeouts, but four walks.

The loss drops Springfield to 9-10 in Tomahawk East League play and 9-14 overall. The Tigers are entering the final week of regular season play and hope to end their current three-game skid when they return home on Wednesday night to host Lamberton. Come on down to cheer on the Tigers!

NOTES: Christian Loomis' single in the second inning ended an 0-for-26 slump at the plate...Alex Fink recorded a hit in his seventh straight game....With the loss, the Tigers are 2-11 in the regular and post-season at New Ulm since 2003. Even through the Brewers have had the Tigers' number at home. Nine of the thirteen games have been decided by just one or two runs...It took Brewer pitcher, Brett Gieseke, just three pitches to retire the Tigers in the fourth inning.
