Lamberton Downs Springfield

7/11/12

On Wednesday night the Tigers headed to Lamberton to take on the 15-2 Long Sox. A long bottom of the fourth and fifth inning put Lamberton up 7-0 as they cruised to an 8-1 victory.

Lamberton sent Johnny Pistulka to the mound. Matt Vogel, Alex Fink, and Ryan Sturm got three straight one-out hits in the top of the first. However, Vogel was thrown out at the plate on Sturm's single. That put a damper on what turned out to be Springfield's best opportunity of the evening, as the Long Sox escaped with a scoreless first inning.

Mike Salazar took the ball for the Tigers and hit leadoff hitter Donald Strand. A stolen base, ground out and a hit from Pistulka gave the Long Sox their first run of the night.

Pistulka and Salazar exchanged zeros in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Derrick Jenniges smashed a double to deep left-center field with one down. Isaac Jenniges followed by tattooing a ball off Salazar's leg. He remained in the game, but struggled with his control. A bases loaded hit batter and base on balls pushed across two for Lamberton, making the score 3-0.

After Salazar hit the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth, Christian Loomis took over the mound. A bunt single loaded the bases. Again, free passes pushed across a pair of runs for Lamberton. Mike Wotschke singled to drive in the sixth and seventh runs for the home team.

Vogel ripped his third hit of the night to start the sixth for Springfield. Three Lamberton errors moved him around the bases to break-up the shutout.

Loomis retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Frank and Adam Schmid started the seventh with two straight walks, but the Long Sox turned their second of three double plays on the night to stomp out the rally. Lamberton added a run in the bottom of the eight leading to a final of 8-1.

The top four batters in the Springfield order accounted for all the Tiger hits with Matt Vogel leading the way with three. Alex Fink had two knocks. Zach Bisel and Ryan Sturm rounded out the offense with one hit apiece. Derrick Jenniges led Lamberton with two hits. Donald Strand, Mike Wotschke, and Johnny Pistulka all had two RBIs. Pistulka earned a complete game win, allowing one unearned run on seven hits with nine strikeouts. Mike Salazar took the loss, working four plus innings, surrendering four earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts, but four walks and five hit batters.

The loss moves Springfield's record to 9-8 in the Tomahawk East and 9-12 overall on the year. Next up, the Tigers return home to host Leavenworth on Friday night. The game also marks Merchant's Appreciation Night and special guest announcer Dick Jonckowski at Riverside Park. See you at the yard!

NOTES: Springfield was without manager Steve Helget on Wednesday night, as he was out of town for a work committment...The Tigers last win in Lamberton came in 2006...Adam Schmid and Marc Salazar were both questionable for Wednesday night's game after leaving Sunday night's game with injuries, but both were able to play.
