Brewers Shutout Springfield

6/24/12

The 10-2, American Division leading, New Ulm Brewers paid a visit to Riverside Park on Sunday night and did a number on a flat Tiger team. The Brewers got an early lead in the first and never looked back, sailing to their eleventh win, 9-0.

Mike Salazar made the start for the hosts and had his toughest start of the season. A solid hitting Brewer team put together two straight two-out singles in the top of first. Brock Sieve gave New Ulm the lead when he smashed a double.

The Brewers continued their assault on Tiger pitching in the second. This time, a base hit and a Springfield error put two runners on with two down. Wade French came up with the big hit, a triple, to put the visitors up 4-0.

The third saw New Ulm put up another pair of runs, again aided by a Tiger miscue. RBI singles by Adam Loose and Zach More were key in the frame.

Salazar worked Springfield's only three-up, three-down inning in the fourth and a scoreless fifth before being lifted. Christian Loomis took over the mound duties in the sixth and kept the Brewer bats quiet for the most part. Of the four hits they had off Loomis, two were infield singles. The defense wasn't much help unfortunately, as Loomis did allow three unearned runs due to four errors during the four innings he worked.

New Ulm starter Chris Cariveau faced five batters in an inning just once during his seven innings of work. That came in the bottom of the second when a Brewer error extended the inning. Other than the second, he faced just three or four batters in each frame, keeping the Tigers at bay.

Loose came on in relief in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Bisel and Jacob Menage greeted him with back-to-back singles and it seemed the Tigers might have something going. However, just as quickly, a double-play snuffed out the rally and Loose retired the remaining batters of the game in order, making the final 9-0.

Jacob Menage and Marc Salazar combined to account for four of the Tigers' six hits on the night. Zach Bisel and Ryan Sturm added one each. For the Brewers, all but one starter had at least one hit, with five players contributing two each. Chris Cariveau was the winning pitcher, working seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits, while striking out five, and issuing just one walk. Mike Salazar took the loss, going five innings, surrendering six runs, three earned, on ten hits, with two strikeouts.

The loss drops the Tigers back to .500 in the Tomahawk East at 6-6. They fall to 6-10 overall on the season. Next up, they'll wrap up their homestand with a Wednesday night match-up with the Gibbon Reds. Come cheer the Tigers back into the win column!

NOTES: Zach Bisel has caught all 134 1/3 innings the Tigers have played thus far this season...Before Sunday night's game, Marty Brandl took a ride in a helicopter to snap a number of aerial photos of Riverside Park. A huge thank you to them for the ride! Check out their website for more information on helicopter rides: www.ridetheskyusa.com. View the photos here: 2012 Riverside Park Aerial Photos
