Lakers Pour It On Tigers

6/22/12

Springfield rode a five game winning streak into Friday night's game against Hanska. Matt Vogel and Dayton Larson exchanged zeros until the Tigers jumped out on top 4-0. The Lakers came to life in the late innings, putting up eight runs in the final two frames to pull out a 10-6 win.

Hanska hurler Larson kept the Tigers off stride through the first three innings, allowing just one hit. Then with one down in the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Sturm opened the scoring when he launched a home run over the leftfield fence. Christian Loomis and Jacob Menage followed with singles. With two on, Marc Salazar smashed a double to make the score 3-0. A Hanska miscue allowed the Tigers to get one more run and give them a 4-0 lead.

Vogel rolled through the first five innings on the mound for the home team, scattering just three hits. In the sixth, he ran into some trouble with a lead-off walk. A base hit and another walk loaded the bases with one out. Vogel's third free pass of the inning got the Lakers their first run. A second run came across with the help of a fielder's choice.

A hit batter and walk in the seventh spelled the end of the night for Vogel. Manager Helget handed the ball over to Max Salazar. Salazar coaxed two outs to get out of the jam with the score still at 4-2.

In the top of the eighth, Hanska put on their hitting shoes getting an RBI base hit from Gary Wilfahrt and a two-run double from Matt Suess to take a 5-4 lead. A triple and a double sent the Tigers to the bullpen again in the ninth. Loomis came on and after a pair of hits, along with a couple Springfield errors, the damage stood at ten.

The Lakers had a bit of an issue wrapping it up in the bottom of the ninth. Springfield was able to plate a pair of unearned runs to make the final 10-6.

Matt Vogel and Marc Salazar led the Springfield bats with two hits each. Ryan Sturm, Christian Loomis, and Jacob Menage rounded out the hits adding one each. For Hanska, Mikale Gustafson, Eric Portner, Micade Thordson, and Gary Wilfahrt, Jr. all had two hits to lead the Lakers. Dayton Larson earned the complete game victory, allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. Max Salazar was tagged with the loss for Springfield, working two innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits with two strikeouts.

The loss moves Springfield to 6-5 half-way through league play and 6-9 overall on the year. Next up, the Tigers hope to put a cap on Riverside Days Weekend with a battle against the American Division leading New Ulm Brewers on Sunday night at 7:30pm. See you there!

NOTES: Ryan Sturm's fourth inning home run was his first ever at Riverside Park...Friday night's game was the first Friday night game the Tigers have been able to play during Riverside Days since 2009, getting rained out in 2010 and 2011.
