Tigers Win Fifth Straight

6/20/12

A streak had to come to an end on Wednesday night when Springfield played host to Essig at Riverside Park. The Tigers entered the game having won four straight. Meanwhile, the Bluejays entered the contest having won three in a row and six of their last seven. Rain showers passed just in time for pre-game infield and the only thing that caused trouble was a fresh crop of mosquitoes. Springfield chased Essig starter Pat Bock in the second inning. The Tigers jumped out to a big lead, on their way to a 13-3 win, in a game shortened to seven innings via the ten-run rule.

The bottom of the first saw the Tigers load the bases with the help of a pair of walks. However, they squandered the opportunity for a big inning, getting just a single run on an RBI base hit by Christian Loomis.

In the bottom of the second, the Tigers got three hits, including a two-run double from Ryan Sturm and an RBI single from Marty Brandl. Essig turned the pitching duties over to Mark Giesen after Springfield had batted around. The Bluejays did little to help themselves during the inning, committing four errors to allow Springfield to bat twelve and plate seven runs, pushing the lead to 8-0.

The Tigers put together three straight hits in the third, capped by another RBI from Loomis. This time he ripped a double to make the score 9-0.

Alex Frank made the start for Springfield on the mound. He did a nice job working around six hits during the first four innings, without allowing the Bluejays to score. In the top of the fifth, the Bluejays put on their hitting shoes, getting a pair of run scoring two-baggers from Kyle Krzmarzick and Mitch Stueber, along with a deep sacrifice fly from Terry Helget to make things interesting at 9-3.

Springfield got a run back in the bottom of the sixth. Frank didn't allow a hit after giving up the three runs in the fifth.

Essig went to the bullpen in the home-half of the seventh to bring on Brad Zenk. Zenk was not able to record an out. Sturm and Jacob Menage drove in the eleventh and twelfth runs. A dropped fly ball allowed Loomis to score the Tigers thirteenth run, putting their lead at ten and ending the ballgame.

Ryan Sturm continued his hot hitting, notching three hits, including two doubles and three RBIs. Alex Fink, Christian Loomis, Jacob Menage, Marty Brandl, and Ryan Beyer added two hits each to the Springfield offense output. Matt Vogel added a single to the Tiger total. Jason Schmitz and Mitch Stueber led Essig with two hits each. On the mound, Alex Frank picked up his second win of the season, working all seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, with six strikeouts. Pat Bock took the loss for Essig, working the first inning and two-thirds, allowing eight runs, four earned, on six hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.

The win improves Springfield's record to 6-4 in league play and 6-8 overall on the year. The Tigers continue their homestand on Friday night when they play host to Hanska. Tradition seems to be that the Friday night game of Riverside Days weekend is rained out. Hopefully that's not the case this year! Go Tigers!
