Brewers Pound Tigers

7/13/11

The New Ulm Brewers were reclassified as a Class B team by the state board earlier this season. They showed why when they visited Riverside Park on Wednesday night. The Brewers pounded out nineteen hits on their way to a 12-3 throttling of the Tigers.

Dave Kreft took the ball for Springfield. New Ulm put together four hits in the top of the first to jump out to a 3-0 lead. In the second, New Ulm plated three additional runs on three hits and two walks. In the top of the third, they batted eight for the third straight inning, and got five hits and four more runs to take a 10-0 lead.

Staked to the ten run lead, Brewer right-hander Wade French kept the Tiger bats quiet, allowing just two hits in five innings of work. He did provide some base runners, however, by walking six Springfield batters.

Christian Loomis came on in relief in the top of the fourth. He kept the Brewers off the board in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth, a Springfield error, along with three New Ulm hits, pushed the Brewer lead to twelve.

Andy Irlbeck came on the throw a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning for New Ulm. Loomis kept New Ulm's tally at twelve by retiring the Brewers in the top of the seventh.

Springfield went into the bottom of the seventh trailing 12-0. They needed to put up three runs to avoid the game ending via the ten-run rule. New Ulm went to left-hander Adam Slander to try to wrap things up. Matt Baier greeted Slander with a base hit. Alex Fink drew a walk and Brady Schwab ripped a single to load the bases. Slander got the next two batters to strikeout, before issuing a walk to Adam Schmid to push across Springfield's first run. Loomis hit a groundball to second that was misplayed and allowed Fink and Schwab to score the second and third Tiger runs.

The game continued with Springfield down by nine. Loomis and Slander retired the sides in order in the eighth. Jordan Milbrath worked a scoreless tune-up inning in the ninth. Slander wrapped things up in the bottom of the ninth, working around a one-out single by Milbrath, to preserve the New Ulm victory.

Matt Baier and Brady Schwab each had two hits for the Tigers. Jordan Milbrath added the only other single for the home team. Cory Ranweiler, Wade French, Brady Ranweiler, and Aaron Pfaff all had three hits each for the Brewers. French earned the win for New Ulm, working five innings, allowing just two hits, but walking six. Dave Kreft took the loss for Springfield, giving up ten runs on twelve hits in three innings of work. Adam Slander picked up a save by working the final three innings of the Brewer victory.

The loss drops the Tigers to .500 in Tomahawk East League play at 8-8 and 9-12 overall. Next up, the Hanska Lakers pay a visit to Riverside Park on Friday night. Come cheer on the Tigers as they look to get back into the win column!
