Springfield Takes Care of Stark

7/8/11

The Tigers returned home on Friday night looking to end a three game skid while hosting Stark. Springfield jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a seven inning 11-1 win behind super pitching from Jason Nachreiner.

Nachreiner made his first start of the season on the mound. He worked efficiently, facing just two batters over the minimum through the first four innings.

Zach Bisel continued his hot hitting for the home team when he led off the bottom of the first with a single. Bisel was caught stealing, but Matt Baier was hit by a pitch to relight the rally. Alex Fink followed with a single and Jordan Milbrath smashed a double to drive in Baier and Fink. However, Milbrath was thrown out when he rounded second base a little too wide.

Bisel started a one-out rally in the bottom of the third with his second hit of the night. Baier followed with a single. With runners at first and second, Fink hit a ground ball to second that was overthrown as the second baseman attempted to force Baier at second. This allowed Bisel to score and gave the Tigers runners at second and third. Milbrath picked up his third RBI when he ripped a base hit, scoring Baier and giving Springfield a 4-0 lead.

Chris Sturm drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the fourth. He stole second and came around to score when Ken Sather drilled a single. Sather moved to second on the throw to the plate when Sturm scored. Bisel followed with his third straight hit, pushing across Sather and giving Springfield a six run lead.

Stark got back-to-back singles in the top of the fifth and their starting pitcher, Craig Fischer, helped himself out by driving in a run with a base hit, making the score 6-1.

The Longhorns went to the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth to bring on Tim Seifert. He walked two and hit a batter to load the bases, but kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the fifth. In the sixth, Nachreiner allowed a one-out single, but faced just three in the inning when his defense turned a 6-4-3 double-play to end the half-inning.

The bottom of the sixth saw the Longhorn defense help out the Tigers with two errors. The miscues, combined with a Fink triple allowed Springfield to increase their lead to seven, 8-1.

Christian Loomis took over on the hill for Springfield in the top of the seventh. He walked two, but the Tiger defense helped the pitcher out with their second straight inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the inning, Loomis helped himself with a base hit. Sather drew a one-out walk. Three straight run-scoring hits from Bisel, Baier, and a double by Alex Fink plated three runs, putting the ten-run rule into effect with Springfield on top 11-1.

The top four batters in the Tiger lineup combined for eleven hits on the night. Zach Bisel led the way with four. Alex Fink contributed three hits, missing only a homer for the cycle. Matt Baier and Jordan Milbrath had two hits each, while Christian Loomis and Ken Sather rounded out the night's attack with one hit a piece. Craig Fischer led Stark with two of their six hits and their lone RBI. Jason Nachreiner picked up the win with a solid six inning performance, scattering six hits, while striking out five. Fischer took the loss for the Longhorns, working four innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The win improves Springfield's league record to 8-6 and 9-10 overall on the season. Next up, they'll take on Searles on Sunday at 2pm, a rare July matinee at Riverside Park. The Tigers will host their annual Youth Day with many activities and give-aways for kids in attendance. All youth will be treated to a free hot dog and have the opportunity to do things such as throwing out the first pitch, announcing the starting lineup, and participating in games between innings. See you there!
