Errors-A-Plenty As Bluejays Tame Tigers

6/29/11

The Tigers took on their third straight divisional opponent on Wednesday night at Riverside Park when Essig paid a visit. In the contest both teams were plagued by errors, with thirteen total miscues being committed in the game. The Bluejays were able to take an early lead and hurler Eric Scheibel never allowed more than one hit in any inning, leading Essig to a 7-2 win.

Dave Kreft took the ball for Springfield. He kept Essig off the board until the top of the third, when the Bluejays put together RBI base hits from Kyle and Terry Helget, along with a steal of home when they had runners at first and third to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Zach Bisel worked a two-out walk. Brady Schwab followed with a base hit and drew a throw which allowed Bisel to come around to score.

Springfield gave the run right back in the top of the sixth when three two-out errors allowed the Bluejays to plate their fourth run, taking a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Bluejays returned the favor, giving up an unearned run aided by three errors of their own.

Essig picked up some insurance in the top of the seventh when they converted a lead-off single into a run, via two sacrifice bunts and a wild pitch.

Kreft ran out of gas in the top of the ninth, again being let down by his defense with a two-out error. That error along with three walks in the inning spelled the end of his night. Jason Nachreiner came on with the bases loaded. A wild pitch gave Essig their seventh run, before Nachreiner coaxed a groundout to end the inning.

Scheibel did a great job scattering Tiger base runners. He faced just four batters in six of his nine innings pitched, including the final three frames, giving Essig a 7-2 victory.

Zach Bisel and Brady Schwab were the Springfield offensive leaders with two hits each. Jordan Milbrath, Marc Salazar, and Ken Sather rounded out the offense with one hit each. Kyle Helget led the Bluejays with two hits and an RBI. Eric Scheibel earned the complete game win for Essig, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out five. Dave Kreft took the loss, giving up four earned runs on eight hits in eight and two-thirds innings of work.

Their second straight loss drops the Tigers to 7-5 in the Tomahawk East and 8-9 overall on the season. Springfield will be sending Matt Baier, Jordan Milbrath, and Marc Salazar to the Tomahawk East League All-Star Game in Sleepy Eye on Friday night. Everyone else will have a week off until the Tigers return to action on Wednesday, July 6th with another divisional battle in Leavenworth. The dinged-up Tigers hope to do some healing over the break and start a great July run. Check out the All-Star Game in Sleepy Eye and then we'll see you in Leavenworth!
