Long Sox Come Out on Top

The rain stayed away long enough on Sunday night for the Tigers and Long Sox to complete a quick, well-pitched contest in which the game's only runs were scored in the fourth and seventh innings. Jordan Milbrath and Shane Schoborg locked up in a pitcher's duel. A bases clearing double by Mike Samyn proved to be the difference as Lamberton defeated Springfield, 4-1, in front of a nice Riverside Days weekend crowd.
Tiger starter Jordan Milbrath allowed just two hits during the first four innings, but it was a lead-off walk that allowed Lamberton to break the ice in the top of the fourth. Derrick Jenniges drew that walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. When Johnny Pistulka hit a slow ground ball to short, Jenniges rounded third and kept going toward the plate. Jenniges beat Marc Salazar's throw from first after he had recorded the putout of Pistulka.
Milbrath's mound opponent, left-hander Shane Schoborg, did a great job keeping the Tigers at bay. Springfield loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with no one out, but Schoborg was able to induce a force-out at the plate and then start a 1-2-3 double-play to end the inning.
Springfield sent Milbrath back to the mound in the seventh still trailing by one. Matt Samyn and Pistulka started the inning with hits. A walk to Mike Wotschke loaded the bases. Mike Samyn battled Milbrath by fouling off several pitches before ripped a bases clearing double to left, putting Lamberton up 4-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Milbrath began with a single. Ryan Beyer got an infield single to give Springfield runners at first and second with one out. Matt Vogel got his first amateur hit with a single to right and Milbrath came in to score on a throwing error. Schoborg got another ground ball to end the inning and the Tiger threat.
Christian Loomis came on for the Tigers in the top of the eighth and held the Long Sox hitless for the final two innings. Springfield got two hits in the bottom of the ninth, but one final groundout ended the ballgame, as Springfield fell, 4-1.
Jordan Milbrath and Ryan Beyer led the Tiger bats with two hits each. Marc Salazar, Christian Loomis, and Matt Vogel all added one hit a piece. Shane Schoborg earned the complete game win for the Long Sox, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts. Milbrath took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with ten strikeouts, but too many walks with six.
The loss drops Springfield to 7-4 in league play and 8-8 overall on the season. Next up for the Tigers, they will host Essig on Wednesday night. Here's to sunshine between here and there! Go Tigers!
