Krebs and Tews Combine to Shutout Reds

6/12/11

Springfield continued their road stretch of the schedule on Sunday with a trip to Gibbon for a 2pm game at McGowan Field. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-0 victory. However, all was not positive for the Tigers as they lost Bryant Krebs in the bottom of a fifth with an injury.

Matt Baier and Brady Schwab put together back-to-back one-out hits to get things going in the top of the first off Gibbon starter Shane Ahlbrecht. A wild pitch allowed Baier to score the game's first run.

Krebs loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on two walks and a hit batter, but was able to work his way out of the inning without allowing a Gibbon run.

In the top of the third, Springfield got a key bases-loaded single from Marc Salazar to drive in the Tigers' second run of the day. The Tigers would bat around in the inning. A couple Gibbon errors, along with a wild pitch helped Springfield increase their lead to five.

Gibbon went to the bullpen in the top of the fifth to bring on left-hander Keith Hartman. He faced just one batter over the minimum during his first four innings of work, a solo homer by Matt Tews.

The injury bug bit the Tiger pitching staff for the second time in three games in the bottom of the fifth. Krebs had to leave the game after a lead-off double with an arm injury. Tews took over the mound duties and after the bases were loaded with one out, worked his way out of the jam.

The Tigers got some insurance off Hartman in the top of the ninth, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Baier and an RBI base hit by Tews to push their lead to seven. A Gibbon error allowed the Tigers to plate their eighth run of the day.

Tews kept the Reds off balance, allowing just a lead-off double in the sixth and a two-out single in the ninth as the only Gibbon hits after his first inning of work, preserving the 8-0 win.

Matt Tews led the visitors with three hits. Brady Schwab and Marc Salazar added two hits a piece. Matt Baier and Christian Loomis rounded out the Springfield offense with one hit each. No Gibbon batter had more than one hit. Matt Tews earned the win in relief, working five solid innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts. Shane Ahlbrecht took the loss for Gibbon, working four innings, giving up five runs on six hits, with five strikeouts.

With the win, Springfield improves to 6-3 in the Tomahawk East and 7-7 overall. The Tigers exhibition game that was scheduled against the Marshall A's on Saturday has been canceled. Next up, the Tigers will play host to Sleepy in a make-up game originally scheduled for May 20th at Riverside Park in Springfield. See you there!
