Another Late Inning Loss

6/4/11

Game two of the 2011 Omann Insurance Invitational saw the Tigers take on the co-host St. Stephen Steves. In the tournament, home team was determined by a coin flip and with Springfield winning the toss, the Steves played as the visitor in their park. Jordan Milbrath turned in a great effort allowing one earned run in six innings of work, but the Tigers couldn't hold on to a 3-2 seventh inning lead and fell, 7-3.

St. Stephen scored first when they put together a two-out rally in the top of the second. A hit, followed by a walk and another single, gave them a 1-0 lead.

Christian Loomis started the bottom of the fourth for Springfield with a single. Marc Salazar was then hit by a pitch. Milbrath helped himself out by launching a three-run homer into the trees over the left field fence. The Steves took advantage of a Tiger error in the top of the fifth in order to pull within one, 3-2.

St. Stephen starter, Ben Omann and Milbrath exchanged zeros through the sixth inning. Springfield turned to Alex Fink finish things up in the top of the seventh. The Steves bats came alive in front of their home crowd as they took advantage of a base on balls, followed by two singles to tie the game at three.

Bryant Krebs started the bottom of the inning with a solid single, but the Tigers were unable to move the winning run around the bases. With the score knotted at three at the end of the scheduled seven innings, the game went to the eighth. Fink continued on the mound and got a pop-up double-play to retire the first two Steves. St. Stephen then got a walk and followed up with a two-run homer to left. A base hit followed by another home run deep into the trees iced it for the Steves. Springfield got two runners in the bottom of the eighth, but were unable to work back, falling 7-3.

Christian Loomis and Bryant Krebs paced the Tiger attack with two hits each. Marc Salazar and Jordan Milbrath added one hit a piece. Ben Omann earned the complete-game win for St. Stephen, allowing six hits in eight innings, while striking out nine. Alex Fink was took the loss for the Tigers, allowing five runs in two innings of work.

The loss put the Tigers into the tournament's seventh place game, an 11am match-up against Winsted in Sartell on Sunday morning.
