Errors Doom Redbirds

5/25/11

For the second straight game, the Tigers wound up playing at Riverside Park in a game originally scheduled for the road. The recent rains left the field unplayable in Redwood Falls, so the teams flipped home games and will now play in Redwood Falls for their second meeting, scheduled for Sunday, July 24. Redwood Falls took an early lead, but a total of nine Redbird errors, allowed the Tigers to come back and eventually pull out in front for a 7-5 victory.

Jordan Milbrath made his 2011 mound debut for the Tigers. Walks would haunt Milbrath as two of the three runners he allowed to score reached via a free pass.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth. Dave Kreft started the home half of the inning by being hit by a pitch. After two were out, Christian Loomis came through with a base hit. Kreft came in to score Springfield's first run of the night when Danny Christensen reached on a Redwood Falls miscue.

Milbrath battled through the fifth and sixth innings, stranding two runners in each frame. In the bottom of the sixth, Milbrath was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved him up to second. A base hit by Christensen along with a Redbird error allowed Milbrath to score. Jim Eckstein tied the game when he ripped a single to right field.

Kreft come on in relief in the top of the seventh, retiring the side in order. In the bottom of the seventh, Springfield put together a base hit by Brady Schwab, a bunt single by Marc Salazar, and a big two-out hit by Ken Sather. This, combined with two Redwood Falls errors, gave Springfield a 5-3 lead.

Redwood Falls battled back in their next at-bat, taking advantage of a hit batter, walk, a Tiger error and an RBI base hit from Logan Swann to tie the game at five.

Springfield got back-to-back one-out hits from Eckstein and Matt Baier in the bottom of the eighth. Redwood Falls committed two fielding errors which allowed both to score, putting the Tigers on top to stay, 7-5.

Jim Eckstein and Brady Schwab led the way for Springfield with two hits each. Matt Baier, Marc Salazar, Ken Sather, Christian Loomis and Danny Christensen each added a hit to the Tiger attack. Logan Swann and former Tiger third baseman, Jesse Berg, led Redwood Falls with two hits each. Dave Kreft earned his first win for Springfield, working the final three innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts. John Jenniges picked up the loss in an eight inning complete game effort for the Redbirds. He allowed four earned runs, on nine hits, with six strikeouts.

The victory moves Springfield to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Tomahawk East. Next up for the Tigers, they'll travel to Hanska on Sunday afternoon for a 2pm contest. See you at the yard!
