Long Sox Rout Tigers
7/16/10
Springfield traveled to Lamberton on Friday night to take on the Patriot Division leading Long Sox. The Legion team's success in the playoffs has left the Tigers with a depleted pitching staff. They turned to Bryant Krebs to make his first start of the season. The Long Sox put together a seven run second inning and never looked back as they shortened the game to seven innings via the ten-run rule with a 13-2 victory.
A Lamberton error to start the game got Zach Bisel on base. Marc Salazar moved him up with a sacrifice bunt. Christian Loomis followed with a base hit and Brady Schwab got the Tigers on the board with a single.
Krebs retired the Long Sox in order in the bottom of the first and took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the second. After retiring the first batter, Lamberton put together five hits, two walks, and a Springfield error to plate seven runs, taking a 7-1 lead.
In the third, the Long Sox got a lead-off double and scored another run to increase their lead to seven. In the second through the fourth innings, Lamberton pitcher, Johnny Pistulka, retired six of seven consecutive batters on strikeouts. In the top of the fourth, three straight hits by Jordan Milbrath, Alex Fink, and Danny Christensen loaded the bases. Matt Baier was hit by a pitch to push across Springfield's second run.
Krebs' defense let him down in the home half of the fourth and fifth innings, as the Tigers committed four errors leading to four unearned runs. The Long Sox took a 13-2 lead into the top of the sixth.
Schwab came on in the bottom of the sixth to retire Lamberton in order. Shane Shoborg mopped up for the Long Sox in the top of the seventh, striking out the side and wrapping up the eleven run victory.
Christian Loomis and Alex Fink had two hits each to lead the Springfield bats. Brady Schwab, Jordan Milbrath, and Danny Christensen all added one hit each to the Tiger total. Johnny Pistulka earned the win for Lamberton, going six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out eight. Bryant Krebs was tagged with the loss, working five innings, and giving up eight earned runs.
The loss is Springfield's fifth straight, dropping their overall record to 8-17 and 5-14 in the Tomahawk East. The Tigers are 2-8 over their last ten games. They'll look to get out of the tail spin on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Searles to battle the Grizzlies. See you there!
