Brewers and Bugs Spoil Evening

7/14/10

The mosquitoes were thick and chased away much of the crowd on Wednesday night when Springfield hosted New Ulm at Riverside Park. The game got started about a half-hour late due to a Legion playoff game played prior to the amateur contest. The Tigers held Merchant's Appreciation Night as they thanked all of their sponsors for their great support during the 2010 season.

Alex Frank took the hill for Springfield and kept the Brewers off the scoreboard, allowing just one hit through the first three innings.

Danny Christensen started the home half of the third with a single and advanced to second on a New Ulm error. Alex Fink laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base when the Brewers attempted to throw out Christensen at third. Matt Baier got the Tigers on the board when he drove in Christensen with a base hit.

Frank ran into trouble in the top of the fourth when the Brewers loaded the bases via two walks and an infield base hit. New Ulm pitcher, Zach More, helped himself out with a two-run double to give New Ulm a 2-1 lead.

There was more trouble in the top of the fifth. After a second straight walk loaded the bases, manager Steve Helget was ejected for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. A base hit and a fielder's choice followed plating two more runs for the visitors.

Springfield showed a spark in the bottom of the fifth, getting another lead-off hit from Christensen. Alex Fink moved him up with a sac bunt and Marc Salazar ripped a double to left field to make the score 4-2.

Frank stranded two runners in the top of sixth and battled his way through the seventh, as New Ulm put together three hits to score two more runs and take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Jason Nachreiner took over on the mound in the top of the eighth. He allowed a double and a single to the first two batters, which resulted in another Brewer run, pushing the score to 7-2. Then Nachreiner settled in to face the minimum for the remainder of the ballgame.

After they scored in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers were't able to bat more than four in any of the remaining innings. Back-to-back singles by Brady Schwab and Bob Fink in the bottom of the eighth was the closest they came to a rally. A two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth was their last hope before More got the final out in the 7-2 New Ulm victory.

Danny Christensen led the Tiger offense, going three-for-three and reaching base in all four of his plate appearances. Bob Fink had a solid night at the plate with two hits. Marc Salazar, Matt Baier, Brady Schwab, and Christian Loomis each added one hit to the Springfield total. For New Ulm, leading the offense was Luke Altmann with three hits. Chris Peters and Brock Sieve also had multiple hits with two each. On the mound, Zach More earned the complete game win, giving up just two runs on nine hits, while striking out six. Alex Frank dropped to 1-6 on the season, working seven innings, allowing six runs, all earned.

With the loss, Springfield falls to 8-16 overall and to 5-13 in the Tomahawk East. Next up, they'll travel to Lamberton on Friday night to take on the Long Sox. Come cheer on the Tigers!
