Redbirds Nip Tigers

7/7/10

Springfield traveled to Redwood Falls on Wednesday night after a week off for the 4th of July holiday. Both team's hurlers were well rested and they locked horns for an old fashioned pitcher's duel. A single unearned run, scored in the bottom of the first, would be all either team could muster. As the Redbirds downed the Tigers, 1-0, in a quick, well-played contest.

John Jenniges was on the bump for Redwood Falls in his second start of the season against Springfield. Brady Schwab led-off with a walk and Matt Baier was hit by a pitch with one-out, but the Tigers were unable to break the ice.

The visitors sent Alex Frank to the mound. He allowed a one-out single to Erich Panitzke in the bottom of the first. Panitzke moved to second on a errant pick-off throw. David Darr drove in the game's only run with a two-out single to put the Redbirds up 1-0.

The Tigers got the bases loaded in the top of the second with just one out, on base hits by Jordan Milbrath and Christian Loomis and aided by a Redbird error. However, they were unable to break that egg on the scoreboard. The top of the fourth saw Springfield with another opportunity to get on the board when Chris Sturm got a hit. Ken Sather walked and Brady Schwab packed the sacks when he was hit by a pitch, but again Springfield left three on in the inning.

After allowing the run in the bottom of the first, Frank settled in, facing just two batters over the minimum in the second through the fifth. The Redbirds threatened in their half of the sixth with back-to-back two-out hits, but Frank worked his way out of the jam. Frank stranded two runners in the bottom of the eighth as well.

Jenniges scattered three hits during the final five frames, never facing more than four batters in any inning, to nail down the one-run win for Redwood Falls.

Christian Loomis was Springfield's leading hitter on the evening, getting two hits. Matt Baier, Jordan Milbrath, Chris Sturm, and Ken Sather all added one hit each. John Jenniges picked up the win for Redwood Falls, his second of the season over Springfield. Jenniges allowed no runs on six hits, while striking out nine in the complete game effort. Alex Frank went the distance for the Tigers, falling to 1-5 on the season with yet another hard-luck loss.

The loss is the Tigers' eighth one-run loss of the season. It drops them to 5-11 in the Tomahawk East and 8-13 overall. Springfield's next two league games will pit them against the National Division leading New Ulm Brewers. Sandwiched between the match-ups against the Brewers, the Tigers will travel to Marshall to take on the A's in an exhibition game. Cheer on the Tigers at Johnson Park on Saturday night against New Ulm!
