Salazar Comes Through As Milbrath Throws A Gem

6/29/10

The Tigers met the Hanska Lakers on Tuesday night at Riverside Park. Everyone in attendance was treated to a great baseball game. Jordan Milbrath threw the best game of his young amateur career. Veteran Laker hurler, Dayton Larson, matched Milbrath zero for zero until Marc Salazar came through with a huge double in the bottom of the eighth to give Springfield a 2-0 win.

Hanska had their best scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth when Mikale Gustafson drew a four pitch walk to start the inning. A stolen base and wild pitch moved him over to third. Milbrath dug deep to get strikeouts on the next two batters before Ken Sather made a great diving catch in centerfield to end the inning.

The Tigers were able to get runners into scoring position in five of the first six innings, but weren't able to claw their way onto the scoreboard.

Milbrath allowed an infield single in the sixth and seventh. Those were the last two base runners that the Lakers were able to muster.

Matt Baier started the home half of the eighth with a single. Danny Christensen replaced him on base when he reached on a fielder's choice. Christensen stole second and Bob Fink was intentionally walked with first base open. Zach Bisel was inserted as a pinch-runner for Fink. After two were out, Salazar smashed a double down the left field line, driving in the Tigers' two runs.

In the top of the ninth, Milbrath found another gear as he struck out the side to nail down the victory.

Bob Fink had a huge night at the plate, going 3 for 3 and leading the Tiger offense. Matt Baier had two hits. Christan Loomis, Marc Salazar and Bryant Krebs each added one hit. Jordan Milbrath threw a complete game shutout, only allowing two hits while striking out thirteen. Dayton Larson was tagged with the hard luck loss for Hanska going all the way for the visitors and giving up just two runs on eight hits while striking out eight.

The victory moves the Tigers to 5-10 in league play and 8-12 overall. The Tigers will send Matt Baier, Alex Frank and Jake Miesen to the Tomahawk East League All-Star Game in Hanska on Friday night. The rest of the squad will enjoy the 4th of July holiday and continue league play on Wednesday, July 7 with an 8pm contest in Redwood Falls. Cheer on the Tigers at the All-Star Game and we'll see you in Redwood!
