Long Ball Does In Tigers

6/27/10

Sleepy Eye visited Riverside Park on Sunday night in a game originally scheduled for Friday. The matchup was postponed due to the storms that came through the area. The large crowd was treated to another excellent ballgame, but this time Springfield came up just short, as the Tigers were unable to overcome a three-run homer by Joey Walter in the top of the ninth and fell, 5-4.

Jesse Berg and Andrew Woitas took the hill for their respective teams. Both teams had opportunities, combining for eleven hits through five innings, but a combined three double-plays helped to keep the game scoreless.

Woitas helped himself with a double to start to top of the sixth. Two additional hits, coupled with two Tiger errors put Sleepy Eye on top, 2-0.

Ryan Sturm started things for the Tigers in the bottom of the inning with a double of his own. Matt Tews got Springfield on the board with a base hit to right. Pinch runner Danny Christensen came in to score on a two-out single by Christian Loomis, tying the game at two.

Neither Berg nor Woitas allowed a hit in the seventh or eighth, as the game went to the final frame still knotted at two. After getting the first out of the ninth, Berg allowed two straight hits. Jason Nachreiner came on in relief to face Joey Walter who came up big for Sleepy Eye with a three-run homer to give the Indians a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Matt Gangelhoff came on to try to get the save. After getting the first out, he allowed three straight hits, getting the Tigers within one, but that would be all, as a second bottom of the ninth win wasn't in the cards for Springfield on the day.

Springfield pounded out eleven hits with Brady Schwab, Ryan Sturm, Matt Tews, and Christian Loomis leading the way with two each. Alex Fink, Matt Baier, and Jordan Milbrath added one hit each to the Tiger attack. Andrew Woitas picked up the win for Sleepy Eye, working eight innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. Jesse Berg took the loss for the Tigers, going eight and one third innings and allowing three earned runs on eleven hits. Matt Gangelhoff notched a save working the bottom of the ninth for Sleepy Eye.

The loss drops Springfield to 7-12 overall and 4-10 in the Tomahawk East. The Tigers will wrap up their long homestand on Tuesday night when the Hanska Lakers visit Riverside Park at 8pm. Springfield will look to avenge a one-run loss in Hanska from their first meeting of the season. See you at the yard!
