Grizzlies Pound Tigers
6/18/10
The Searles Grizzlies paid a visit to Riverside Park on Friday night having lost just once in league play. Their hard hitting attack moved their record to 10-1, as they took care of Springfield, 14-6.
The Tigers sent Jesse Berg to the mound against the Grizzlies. Searles grabbed the lead in the top of the first by putting together a two-out walk, a stolen base, and a base hit to plate their first run.
Springfield got a lead-off single from Marty Brandl in the bottom of the second. Marc Salazar followed with a base hit. Ken Sather loaded the bases with an infield hit. Then Ryan Beyer drew a walk to push across the tying run.
It looked as though a pitcher's duel was brewing in the early innings. After Berg allowed the run in the first, he retired seven batters in a row. Searles got a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth. A base hit and fielder's choice moved the runner around to score and gave Searles a 2-1 lead.
The Grizzlies took advantage of some Tiger defensive miscues to plate unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Christian Loomis drew a two-out walk in the home half of the sixth and Chris Sturm ripped a double to get the Tigers within two, 4-2.
A tough sky contributed to a couple hits for the Grizzlies in the top of the seventh and spelled the end of the night for Berg. Jake Miesen came on in relief and got out of the inning after Searles had pushed the score to 7-2. They added another run in the eighth.
Springfield battled back in the bottom of the eighth, as Matt Baier and Brandl started the inning with hits. Marc Salazar was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A pair of groundouts and a wild pitch cleared the bases and got the Tigers within three, 8-5.
Miesen had a rough ninth inning as the first six Searles batters reached on five hits and a walk, giving the Grizzlies a nine run lead. Baier got an RBI base hit to drive in Brady Schwab in the bottom of the ninth, making the final 14-6.
Matt Baier, Marty Brandl, Marc Salazar, and Chris Sturm combined for eight of Springfield's nine hits with two hits each. Ken Sather added one hit to the Tiger total. Mike Anderson earned the win for the Grizzlies, going eight innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. Jesse Berg's record dropped to 1-1 on the season with the loss as he went the first six innings.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 6-10 overall and 3-8 in the Tomahawk East. Sunday night is Youth Night at Riverside Park as the National Division rival Essig Bluejays come to town for a 7:30pm contest. All youth ages 14 and under get in free and receive a complementary hot dog. Also, there will be drawings and activities all night long for youth in attendance. We hope to see you there!
