Redbirds Rally To Drop Tigers

6/13/10

Rainy weather postponed Saturday night's game at Leavenworth. It also changed Sunday night's game. Originally scheduled to be played in Redwood Falls, it was instead played in Springfield at Riverside Park. The Tigers will play their game on July 7th at Redwood Falls. Springfield jumped out to an early lead, but the Redbirds rallied in the 8th to pull out a one-run victory.

Brady Schwab started the bottom of the first with a walk. Matt Baier reached on an error and Bob Fink got on via a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. Christian Loomis hit a ground ball and an errant throw to the plate allowed Schwab and Baier to score, putting the Tigers on top, 2-0.

Jake Miesen took the ball for the home team. He kept the Redbirds hitless through the first three innings. Miesen scattered five hits during the fourth through seventh innings, getting help from his defense with double plays in the sixth and to end the seventh.

Redwood Falls starter John Jenniges found his groove after falling behind in the bottom of the first. For the remainder of the ballgame, he faced no more than four batters in any inning. The only runners the Tigers were able to get into scoring position were three doubles scattered over the final eight frames.

After retiring the first batter in the top of the eighth, Miesen ran into trouble. Five of the next six Redwood Falls batters got hits. Tyler Stark doubled to drive in the first run for the Redbirds. Jenniges helped himself out with a two-out, two-run single to give Redwood Falls a 3-2 lead.

Jason Nachreiner came on in relief to get the Tigers out of the jam. He retired four of the five batters he faced in the final inning and a third on an efficient nine pitches. Springfield got doubles from Marc Salazar in the home half of the eighth and Jordan Milbrath in the ninth, but couldn't move them around to tie the game, as they fell by a 3-2 final.

The Springfield offense was made up of one hit each by Marc Salazar, Bob Fink, Christian Loomis, Chris Sturm, and Jordan Milbrath. John Jenniges earned the win for the Redbirds, going nine innings, allowing no earned runs on just five hits. Jake Miesen was the losing pitcher going 7 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on ten hits.

The loss drops Springfield to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in the Tomahawk East on the season. The Tigers look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night as they host the Gibbon Reds at 8pm at Riverside Park. Come on down to support your home town team!
