Tigers Have Tough Day in Sleepy Eye

5/23/10

Springfield traveled to Sleepy Eye for a hot Sunday afternoon match-up. The Tiger offense started quick, but the team fell back into the things that have been haunting it so far this season, poor defense and a lack of clutch hitting. Sleepy Eye took advantage and dimed the Tigers, shortening the game to 8 innings.

In the top of the first, Matt Baier and Ryan Sturm ripped back-to-back one-out, base hits. Matt Tews walked to load the bases. Then Marc Salazar drove in the first run of the day, grounding into a fielder's choice.

Alex Frank made his second start of the year on the mound. Sleepy Eye went right to work in the bottom of the first, putting together two hits to tie the game at one. Sleepy Eye starter, Matt Gangelhoff, surrendered a hit in the top of the second, but that would be the last Springfield could muster during his six innings of work.

In the bottom of the third, Sleepy Eye took advantage of two Springfield errors and three walks to plate six runs and put the game out of reach. They added single runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.

The Tigers showed some life in the top of the seventh when Brady Schwab singled and Baier followed with a double to deep left-center field. Schawb scored on a Sleepy Eye error for Springfield's second run of the game.

Frank gave-way to Ryan Sturm in the bottom of the eighth in mop-up duty with the score 10-2. Sturm was unable to record an out, as Sleepy Eye worked three walks and a base hit to push their lead to ten and end the ballgame.

Matt Baier led the Springfield bats with two hits, including a big double. Brady Schwab, Ryan Sturm, Marty Brandl, and Alex Frank each contributed hits to the Tiger total. Matt Gangelhoff earned the win for Sleepy Eye, going six innings, allowing one run on just three hits. Frank was tagged with the loss to drop his record to 0-2 on the year.

The loss drops the Tigers to 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Tomahawk East. Hopefully, it'll be home-sweet-home on Wednesday night for Springfield as they host the Stark Longhorns in an 8pm game. Come on down to cheer on the home team as they look to notch their first league win of the season!
