Springfield Wraps Up Regular Season With Win in Stark

7/13/08

Sunday was a beautiful day to play two as the Tigers played their second game of the day and final regular season game at Stark. Depending on the result of St. James' remaining games, there was still a chance that Springfield could finish in first place in the division, if they could defeat the Longhorns. The Tigers did just that, topping Stark 6-2.

Jake Miesen started on the mound for the visitors. In the Stark half of the second, he surrendered a leadoff homer to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. After giving up the run, Miesen went on a streak, striking out 7 of 10 batters he faced.

Longhorn starter Brad Mathiowetz kept the Tigers off the board until the sixth inning when Springfield scored three runs to make the score 3-1. Matt Baier reached on a base hit. Brady Schwab moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt before Bob Fink drew a walk. Adam Beers doubled down the left field line to drive in Baier. Ryan Sturm came through, in his return to the lineup, with a big double scoring Fink and Beers.

A one-out walk, coupled with a base hit and a Springfield error allowed Stark to get within one run in the bottom of the seventh. Miesen worked his way out of the inning with a strike 'em out - throw 'em out double play.

Schwab started the top of the eighth with a walk. Fink followed with a base hit. Ryan Sturm drove in his third run of the game to push the Springfield lead back to two. The Tigers picked up some insurance in the ninth when Marty Brandl started things with a base hit. Chris Sturm drew a walk and Schwab was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fink continued his big day with a two-run single giving Springfield a four run lead at 6-2.

Jon Diede came in to finish things up in the bottom of the ninth and faced just three batters, giving up a single, but getting a double play to end the ballgame.

Jake Miesen earned the win, going a solid eight innings, while striking out nine. The four, five, and six hitters in the Tiger order led the offense. Bob Fink, Adam Beers, and Ryan Sturm each had two hits and accounted for all of the Springfield RBIs.

Springfield finishes the regular season with an overall record of 14-12 and 13-9 in league play. They have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will open a best of three game series at Riverside Park on Friday, July 25 in round two of postseason play. An exhibition game may be added to the schedule during the almost two week layoff to help keep the team sharp.
