Big Inning Does in Tigers

7/9/08

Springfield played host to the Leavenworth Orioles in their final regular season home game on Wednesday night. A nice crowd was on hand for Sponsor & Merchant Appreciation Night. The Tigers pulled out to an early lead, but the Orioles put together a big inning to move ahead and earn a 5-3 victory.

Matt Tews made his first start in almost three weeks and looked strong during the first six innings, giving up just three hits and retiring the side in order four of the first six frames.

In the bottom of the third, Brandon Wilhelmi got a two-out base hit. Three Leavenworth errors brought Wilhelmi around to score the first run of the game. Springfield got three straight hits from Marty Brandl, Bryant Krebs, and Wilhelmi to score two runs in the home half of the fifth, moving the score to 3-0.

Leavenworth took advantage of a leadoff walk, a Springfield error, and four hits to plate four runs and take a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh. The Orioles started the eighth with a triple and scored their fifth run on a RBI single to move the score to 5-3.

After the fifth, the Springfield offense was only able to get one hit, a Wilhelmi single, his third of the night, leading the Tigers. Matt Tews got tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 1-5 on the year.

Springfield's record moves to 12-11 overall and 11-8 in the Tomahawk East. Next up, they'll travel to New Ulm on Friday for an 8pm contest with the Brewers. Go Tigers!
