Wilhelmi Fans a Dozen as Springfield Wins Forth Straight

7/7/08

Monday night the Tigers traveled to Redwood Falls to take on the Redbirds in a game that got started at 9:30pm due to a Redwood Falls Legion baseball game that was played that evening as well. Both starting pitchers threw complete games allowing a total of just three runs as the Tigers came out on top, 2-1.

Brandon Wilhelmi made the start for the visitors. He began by striking out the side in the bottom of the first inning. He surrendered a single run in the bottom of the second when the Redbirds put together a double along with an RBI base hit. Wilhelmi gave up just two more hits during the final seven innings of the game.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second, Springfield went to work in the top of the third. Dave Groebner started things when he legged out an infield single. Chris Moritz moved him up to second with a sacrifice bunt. Bryant Krebs tied the game with a single, driving in Groebner. Andy Moritz reached on a Redwood Falls error and Matt Baier gave Springfield the lead with an RBI base hit, scoring Krebs.

Neither team was able to plate a run after the third inning. Springfield had several chances, getting runners into scoring position in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but were unable to extend their lead. The Redbirds biggest threat came in the bottom of the ninth when they drew two walks, but Wilhelmi was able to work his way out of the inning and lead the Tigers to victory.

While striking out twelve, Wilhelmi earned his sixth win of the season with the victory. Dave Groebner led the Tigers at the plate with three of Springfield's six hits, including two infield singles.

The win is Springfield's forth straight, moving their overall record to 12-10 and 11- 7 in the Tomahawk East League. The last week of the regular season will be a busy one, as the Tigers will be playing four games in five days. They'll look to pick up their fifth straight win on Wednesday night when the Leavenworth Orioles invade Riverside Park for the final regular season home game. Come down and cheer on the Tigers as they host Sponsor & Merchant Appreciation Night and prepare to make a playoff run!
