St. Martin Shuts Out Tigers

Springfield had a second chance to play in St. Stephen on Saturday in the Omann Insurance Invitational Tournament. The St. Stephen ballpark is nestled into a wooded depression and often when balls are hit one can hear an echo. There were lots of echoes in the Tigers' second game of the tournament.
Jon Diede made his first start of the season on the mound. He started the game by striking out the first two batters. St. Martin got a couple runners on base, but Diede was able to work out of the inning without allowing a run. Brady Schwab smashed a two-out double in the bottom of the inning, but was stranded there.
The Martins started the scoring in the top of the second when they scored an unearned run, taking advantage of a Springfield error and two singles. In the third, they extended their lead, putting together four singles and scoring three runs to increase their advantage to 4-0.
Schwab started the bottom of the fourth with a base hit. Ryan Sturm ripped a double, but Schwab was thrown out at the plate. The St. Martin pitcher worked his way out of the inning, ending the Tigers' biggest threat of the game. Springfield seemed to have no luck, hitting the ball very hard, but always within the range of the fielders. The Martins seemed to be able to find the holes with much more regularity, dropping balls in for hits.
St. Martin added two more runs in the top of the fifth on the single and a two-run homer. Chris Sturm came on in relief in the sixth. He had a rough start, walking the first two batters he faced, before allowing a monster three-run home run, making the score 9-0, which would be the final.
The loss put Springfield into the 7th place game on Sunday morning in Sartell against the Muskies. Jon Diede was the losing pitcher and Brady Schwab led the Tigers at the plate with two hits.
