Tigers Notch First Tomahawk East League Win of the Season

5/18/08

Springfield made the trip to St. James on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for a ball game, resuming their Tomahawk East League schedule. Brandon Wilhelmi took the mound for the Tigers. Five St. James errors helped the Tigers cruise to an 11-4 win.

The Tigers started the scoring in the top of the first, taking advantage of an A's error and a double by Ryan Sturm to make the score 2-0 after the first half inning. The A's picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the second to cut the Springfield lead to one.

The visitors scored their third run in the top of the fourth when Bob Fink led off with a single. Fink moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Beers. Jon Diede came through with a clutch two-out single to make the score 3-1.

In the Springfield half of the fifth inning, Brady Schwab started things with a double to deep right-center field. The Tigers didn't get another hit in the inning, but were able to plate four runs thanks to a walk, hit batter, and three St. James errors. Wilhelmi battled through a tough bottom of the inning, surrendering a run on two hits and one Springfield error.

Schwab again started the inning in the sixth by reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Sturm followed with a single. Matt Baier advanced the runners with a nice sac bunt. Schwab came in to score on a wild pitch, giving the Tigers a six run lead, 8-2.

Diede came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth and allowed two runs on six hits over the final four frames. Springfield scored two additional runs in the eighth and a one run in the top of the ninth, resulting in the final, 11-4.

Brandon Wilhelmi picked up the win, going the first five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Jon Diede earned his first save of the season, a rare four inning variety, as he finished things up for the Tigers.

Springfield evened their overall record at 2-2 on the season with the win. The Tigers' first game under the lights at Riverside Park will take place on Friday when the Sleepy Eye Indians come to town. It'll be a busy baseball weekend with games scheduled for Friday, Sunday, and Monday of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
