Springfield and Bird Island Battle to a Tie

With the Tigers wrapping up their regular season on Sunday and not playing again until Saturday, the chance to travel to Bird Island for an exhibition contest on Tuesday night was a great opportunity to "get some work in" and stay fresh before kicking off Region 2C play.
A well-played game by both clubs saw the Bullfrogs grab a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Springfield had some opportunities, but didn't get on the board until the seventh. The Tigers tied it at two in the eighth, taking advantage of a lead-off walk.
This awoke the Bird Island bats in the bottom of the eighth. They scored two runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead into the ninth. Springfield didn't quit. A pair of clutch extra-base hits knotted the score at four.
The teams' managers agreed that their pitchers had seen enough work and that the ninth would be the last inning. The Bullfrogs gave it their all going for the win, loading the bases, but Matt Vogel coaxed a pair of grounders to end the game in a tie.
NOTES: Bird Island center fielder Trent Athmann was busy in the fifth through seventh innings. He recorded all three outs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and again all three in the seventh. Many were very well hit and he had to cover some ground to flag them down. It was likened to bottle rockets on the 4th of July. One after another from the plate to center...Bird Island was a co-host of the 2010 State Tournament along with Willmar...The Region 2C Tournament kicks off on Friday, 8/7. Twelve teams will be reduced to three to represent the Tomahawk East at the 2020 Minnesota Amateur Baseball State Tournament in Springfield and Milroy.
