Springfield Defeats St. James

6/10/07

Springfield finished up a busy weekend with a trip to St. James.  The game was delayed about half an hour due to a rain shower that passed through just as the Tigers were taking infield before the game.  After a little work the field was in good shape and ready to go.

Springfield sent Matt Tews to the mound.  Tews had been the losing pitcher in the first meeting of the season between the two teams.  On this day, he would not be denied.  Springfield started their scoring in the third inning, when Kyle Kraska smashed a one-out single.  He stole second and then advanced to third on a ground out by Brent Haseleu.  Brady Schwab came up next and delivered with a base hit, scoring Kraska.  The Tigers extended their lead in the fifth.  They plated three runs on base hits by Brandon Wilhelmi, Kraska, Haseleu, and Matt Baier.

Tews surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.  St. James led off with a single.  The runner scored aided by a Tiger error.  The A's moved to within one run in the bottom of the eighth.  They started with three straight singles.  The score became 4-3 as the final run of the afternoon was scored on a double play ball.  Tews showed a little extra something in the bottom of the ninth when he went out to go for the complete game.  He struck out the first two batters, the first strike outs he had since the first inning.  With a pop-up to shortstop, the Tigers finished the weekend 3-0.

The win moves Springfield's record to 6-3 on the year.  Tews' complete game was his fourth in four starts.  The Tigers will finish their road trip with a drive to Redwood Falls on Wednesday night to take on the Redbirds at 8pm.
