Berg Beats Orioles
The Tigers started a busy weekend of baseball with a trip to Leavenworth. Springfield manager Jesse Berg did exactly what his team needed him to do, go out and put some zeroes on the board. It wasn't the most tidy performance, but Berg was a bulldog on the mound, leading the Tigers to a 4-0 victory.
It didn't take long for Springfield to end their streak of seventeen scoreless innings. In the top of the first, the Tigers took advantage of back-to-back singles by Kyle Kraska and Brady Schwab, along with a Leavenworth error to take the lead, 1-0. Leavenworth got two runners on in the bottom of the inning, but the Tigers were able to work their way out of it with some nice fielding by the guy on the hill. Springfield rolled out some small ball in the fourth inning, getting three consecutive bunt singles. A couple Oriole errors allowed the Tigers to move the score to 3-0. Leavenworth had runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to get onto the scoreboard.
Springfield scored their final run in the seventh, as Schwab led-off with a single and stole second. A two-out error by Leavenworth made the tally 4-0. Berg found a second wind after battling his way through the bottom of the fifth, facing no more than four batters in each of the final four frames. In throwing the shutout, Berg picked up his second win of the season. Oriole pitcher Gabe Hirsch was very respectable on the hill in his complete game effort, as well. All four of the runs he surrendered were unearned and he struck out fourteen Tiger batters.
The win moves the Tiger record to 4-3 on the year. Springfield hopes to
start a winning streak as they travel to Gibbon to take on the Reds on Saturday
