Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tiger Pitching Corrals Longhorns

5/27/07

It was yet another glorious evening at Riverside Park, as the Tigers moved their record to 3-1 on the season with the winning combination of pitching and defense.  The game versus the Longhorns was originally scheduled for 2pm, but was pushed back to 7:30pm due to high school graduation.

After escaping the top of the first where Stark loaded the bases, Springfield roared to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning.  Brent Haseleu led off with an infield single.  Brandon Wilhelmi moved him up on an excellent sacrifice bunt.  Right-fielder Brady Schwab knocked in the game's first run with a single.  The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the third, getting runners on first and second, but were unable to increase their lead.

In the top of the fifth, Stark took advantage of Tiger starter Matt Tews' uncharacteristic wildness to tie the game.  A single, followed by a sac bunt, a hit batter and another base hit loaded the bases.  The Longhorns scored their run when Tews hit the Longhorn designated hitter, Tyler Jensen.  Following the hit batter, Tews settled down and worked his way out of the inning.  Things were quiet on the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth.  Haseleu drew a walk.  Wilhelmi followed with a bunt single.  Stark made a pitching change and the Tigers took advantage of two wild pitches to take the lead.  Schwab drew a walk and Ryan Sturm made the score 3-1 with a sacrifice fly scoring Wilhelmi.  Chris Sturm extended the Tiger lead to 4-1 with a single plating Schwab.

Tews finished up the complete game victory, picking up his first win of the season.  Tiger first baseman Ryan Sturm suffered an ankle injury on the final play of the game and his status in uncertain.  The Tigers won their second straight game relying on strong pitching and excellent defense.  The team ERA over the first four games is a stellar 1.00.  The defense has been excellent, with just two errors over the past three games.  Springfield hopes to have Sturm available when they wrap up their four-game home stand on Friday night as the rival Long Sox from Lamberton come to town.
