Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Mauled by Grizzlies to End Season

8/3/06

After being swept by the New Ulm Brewers in the second round of the playoffs, the Tigers still had a chance to make the region playoffs, if they could win two straight games.  Springfield fell behind Searles in the top of the first inning and would never recover.  The Grizzlies added three additional runs in the third inning on two hits and aided by two Tiger errors.  Springfield climbed back to within three runs when Adam Timm walked and was followed by back-to-back base hits by Matt Tews and Brady Schwab.  The Tigers made the score 4-2 in the fourth, taking advantage of a walk by Bob Fink and an RBI base hit by Brent Weber.  Searles put the game out of reach with three additional runs in the fifth inning, moving the score to 7-2.  Springfield starter Tews went the first seven innings and was relieved by Weber in the eighth. The Grizzlies first four batters reached and scored against Weber bringing the score to 11-2.  The Tigers had plenty of base runners during the game, but were only able to muster four hits, leaving thirteen runners on base throughout the course of the contest.  The loss for the Tigers means they are eliminated from the Tomahawk East League playoffs.  The win for Searles means they stay alive to face Redwood Falls on Friday night to determine the wild card and sixth seed for the region playoffs.  Springfield looks to return the majority of their roster next year and make another run.  Finishing with a final record of 14-13, it was the first time since 2000 the Tigers have finished with a record over .500.  See you next year!

Matt Tews made the start for the Tigers.  He picked up the loss, pitching seven innings, allowing seven runs, three of which were earned.  Brent Weber pitched the final two frames and was tagged for four runs, three earned, on three hits.  The Springfield bats were quiet in the season finale.  Tews, Brady Schwab, Weber, and Jesse Berg all had one hit each.
