Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Swept by New Ulm

7/30/06

The Tigers had their chances, but were unable to pull out a victory in game two of the best-of-three series against the New Ulm Brewers.  The win gives the Brewers a place in the region tournament, which will begin this upcoming weekend.  New Ulm got on the board in the top of the first, taking advantage of an error to plate an unearned run, giving them a 1-0 lead.  Springfield stormed back in the bottom of the inning when Adam Timm scored on a Brady Schwab base hit.  After Timm retired the Brewers in order in the second, the Tigers took the lead when Andy Moritz, Timm, and Matt Tews slugged three straight hits, plating two runs, moving the score to 3-1.  The lead didn't last long, as New Ulm batted-around in the third, scoring four runs on four hits and aided by a Tiger error.  The Brewers added a run in the fourth to make the score 6-3.  New Ulm made an early pitching change, bringing in Chris Peters to pitch in the bottom of the third inning.  He caged the Tigers, retiring eleven straight batters after allowing the first two to reach.  Springfield cut the lead to one in the seventh, when Ryan Sturm ripped a one-out double, followed by singles by Schwab and Bob Fink.  Brent Weber started the bottom of the eighth by crushing a triple to centerfield.  However, the Tigers were unable to get him the last ninety feet.  The 6-5 final was all the closer Springfield would get.  The Tigers still have a chance to make the regional playoffs, but the road is a bit more difficult.  They will play Wednesday against the loser of the Essig/Searles series.  Then on Thursday the winner of that game will play the winner of the losers from the other division.  That winner of two straight games, will move on the regions as the sixth seed and face Milory in the opening game.

Adam Timm patrolled the hill for Springfield, going the first eight innings.  He surrendered six runs, three of which were earned, giving him the loss.  Jon Diede pitched the final frame.  The Tigers broke double digits in hits for the first time in awhile.  They were led by Brady Schwab, who was three for five on the night.  Timm, Brent Weber, and Andy Moritz added two hits each to the Tiger cause.  Matt Tews, Ryan Sturm and Bob Fink added one hit each to bring the Springfield hit total on the night to twelve.
