Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Power Past the Reds into Round Two

7/23/06

Springfield had only four hits on the day, but two of them were round-trippers, giving the Tigers just enough to defeat Gibbon, 3-2.  Adam Timm led off the game by hitting the third pitch he saw over the left field fence to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.  It was the first homer of the season for the Tigers as a team.  Centerfielder Chris Sturm launched a solo shot on the top of the fourth to give Springfield a 2-0 lead.  Tiger starter Timm labored his way through the early innings on the hot afternoon, going to three ball counts on four of the first eight batters he faced.  By the third inning he had settled in, being much more efficient with his pitches.  In the bottom of the fifth, Gibbon led off with a single, followed by a double.  After getting the lead-off hitter to ground out, the Reds third basemen hit a two run single, tying the game at two.  The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Matt Baier led-off with a walk.  He advanced to third when Matt Tews laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into centerfield by the Reds.  After a pitching change, Chris Sturm got his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.  Springfield had chances to add insurance runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but was unable to take advantage of the opportunities.  Brent Weber came on with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, pitching the final inning and a third to pick up his first save of the season.  The win for the Tigers meant the end of the season for Gibbon, finishing with a 1-23 record.  Springfield moves on to face the New Ulm Brewers in another best of three game series starting on Friday.

Adam Timm picked up his second win of the season, pitching 7 2/3 innings. Brent Weber slammed the door, going the final 1 1/3 innings, facing just the minimum four batters and notching two strikeouts.  The Tigers didn't have many hits, but they made the ones they got count.  Timm and Chris Sturm each had a home run.  Ryan Sturm added a double and Weber chipped in a single.
