Tigers Start 2006 Season With a 10 Inning Victory

Tigers Win Home-Opener Against St. James

5/21/06

Springfield Baseball Association board member Bob Sturm threw out the first pitch to his son Ryan to start off the 2006 home-opener at Riverside Park.  Springfield was victorious behind a great pitching performance by Matt Tews.  The Tigers got a two-run lead in the bottom of the second on a walk, hit batter, and a St. James error.  The lead was extended to 3-0 in the seventh on an RBI base-hit by Brandon Wilhelmi, scoring pinch runner Michael Schumacher.  The A's got one unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final, 3-1.

In his second outing of the young season, Matt Tews tossed another complete game victory, allowing just one unearned run on only two hits, while striking out twelve.  At the plate, Brandon Wilhelmi, Bob Fink, Brady Schwab, Chris Sturm, and Matt Tews all contributed hits.  Schwab and Sturm both had doubles.
